AIIMS, one of the most prestigious medical institutions in India, has recently introduced a controversial hiring policy for the post of Nursing Officers. As per the new rule, recruitment will follow an 80:20 gender ratio, favoring female over male candidates. This means 80% of the posts are reserved for women and only 20% for men.
While gender equity is crucial, many professionals and aspirants are questioning whether this policy is fair or discriminatory. Is this truly a step toward empowerment, or is it a form of gender-based exclusion? The Indian Constitution advocates for equality and merit, so should such a strong gender ratio exist in a sector where skills, not gender, matter the most?
Male nurses have already been facing challenges regarding recognition and equal opportunities. With this new rule, their future seems even more uncertain.
🧑⚕️👩⚕️ In healthcare, do we really need gender-based hiring, or should the focus be only on competence and compassion?
